Newcomers’ Classes in the Netherlands: A Flying Start for Every Child
Moving to a new country brings many changes, especially for families with children. One of the most significant challenges is finding a way into the Dutch education system when a child does not yet speak the language. Fortunately, the Netherlands offers a special safety net for this: newcomers’ classes and schools.
What are newcomers’ classes?
Newcomers’ classes are temporary provisions designed to assist children from abroad with their integration. The primary goal is for children to learn the Dutch language and adapt to the education system before transitioning into a regular class.
The placement usually depends on the child’s age:
Primary education (ages 6–12): Children in this group attend a newcomers’ school or language school. For children under 6, it is often believed they can pick up the language naturally through immersion in a regular class; however, some municipalities require this from the age of 4.
Secondary education (ages 12–18): Older children attend an Internationale Schakelklas (ISK – International Bridging Class). Here, they receive intensive language support alongside academic subjects such as mathematics, science, physical education, and creative arts.
How long is an ISK or newcomer's class in the Netherlands?
There is no fixed duration for a child’s stay in a newcomers’ class; it depends on their individual progress, including social development, language proficiency, and academic achievement. In primary education, this typically lasts from one year to a year and a half. In secondary education, students generally attend an ISK for two years. A child only transitions to regular education when the teacher deems them ready.
Is an ISK or nemcomer's class a setback?
Many parents worry that time spent in a newcomers’ class means their child is “losing a year.” However, this should not be viewed as a setback, but as a valuable investment in their future. Individual learning plans help children not only master the language but also gain the social confidence needed to succeed when they transition to the regular curriculum.
Need guidance in navigating this transition?
While the Dutch system provides these facilities, the path to the right school can still feel overwhelming and complex. Every child is unique, and finding the best match within a local system requires more than just a list of schools; it requires a clear strategy.
